SCENIC LOOPS

All drive times are approximate. Allow more time for sightseeing, wildlife, and weather. Check with the lodge you're staying with to confirm road openings and Yellowstone Park gate opening dates. Gas stations are posted on each map. However, not all stations may be open all year long.

Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway

Mileage: 27.5 miles / 44.3 km
Drive Time: 45 minutes
Details: The Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway begins at the East entrance of Yellowstone National Park. From there, it follows the North Fork of the Shoshone River through the Shoshone National Forest and ends at the forest boundary. However, the beauty of this drive doesn’t stop there. Enjoy the view all the way from the East entrance of the Park to the Buffalo Bill Reservoir and dam right outside of Cody. Teddy Roosevelt referred to this drive from the Park entrance to Cody as “the most scenic 50 miles in America.”

All Lodges of East Yellowstone are located along this route, US Highway 14-16-20.

Chief Joseph Scenic Byway

Mileage: 47 miles / 75.6 km
Drive Time: 1 hour
Details: The view of Sunlight Basin and Dead Indian Summit (elevation 8,060 ft) from the Dead Indian Overlook in the Shoshone National Forest will astound you. Visit the location of the flight of Chief Joseph and his band of Nez Perce. Learn more about the history of Chief Joseph along the way. This is certainly a ride to remember!

Beartooth Highway Scenic Byway

Mileage: 68.7 miles / 110.5 km
Drive Time: 2 hours
Details: From Cooke City, MT to Red Lodge, MT

Experience the Beartooth Mountain Range in Wyoming and Montana. The Beartooth Highway is the highest-elevation highway in the Northern Rockies, providing fantastic wide-open views. Many locals refer to the byway as “The Top of the World Highway.” One visit and you’ll see why.
